EMDR Consultation and Certification FAQs
-
EMDR consultation is structured support from an EMDRIA-approved consultant that helps you apply what you learned in basic training to real clinical situations. Training gives you the protocol. Consultation gives you the judgment, the pacing, the ability to read what is happening in the room and respond from a place of skill rather than anxiety.
EMDRIA requires consultation with an approved consultant as part of the certification process. Most therapists find that consultation also produces some of the most significant growth of their career, regardless of whether certification is the goal.
Even if you’re not pursuing certification, consultation can still support your growth as an EMDR therapist.

It’s never too soon, and it’s never too late! Many people find starting consultation shortly after basic training is one of the best things you can do for your development.
The learning that happens in those early months of practice, when you are building your clinical instincts and finding your footing with the protocol, is some of the most formative. Skilled support during that period accelerates your growth and helps you avoid habits that are harder to unlearn later.
However, starting right away isn’t the best fit for everyone and that’s ok. Even if you’ve been practicing independently for many years you can still benefit from consultation or even start working towards certification.
-
If you are completing consultation toward EMDRIA Certification, you have five years from the date you formally start the process to complete the certification requirements. Many consultees see me about once a month and complete the certification in 1.5-2 years.
Additionally, some folks seek consultation only for clinical support with challenging cases or to hone a particular skill, which may require a different timeline.

I currently charge $100 for individual consultations and $75 for group consultations. The frequency of consultation is based on each consultee's uns unique goals and needs.

Yes, but not all of them.
Most therapists feel a bit intimidated about recording sessions and watching them in consultation. I know i did! However, almost all of them (including me) say it was less intimidating than they expected and extremely beneficial to their learning process.
EMDRIA strongly recommends video review as part of the consultation process because watching a session together gives us far more information than a verbal summary can. We can see pacing, attunement, client responses, and the subtle moments that are easy to miss in a verbal summary. It is one of the most powerful tools available for clinical growth, and Carolyn creates a container where that process feels safe, not exposed.

Carolyn offers therapy specifically for therapists, and this is a population she understands intimately. If you are carrying unprocessed material from your own history, if your clients' trauma is affecting you more than you want to admit, or if burnout is starting to erode your sense of purpose, that is something that can be addressed directly through EMDR therapy. For many therapists, doing their own healing work and growing as an EMDR clinician are not separate paths. For more information click: https://www.emdrtherapy.pro/therapy-for-therpists

The best way to find out is to have a conversation. Carolyn works with therapists who are serious about their growth, willing to be honest about where they are struggling, and ready to do the kind of deep work that produces real change. If that sounds like you, reach out at https://www.emdrtherapy.pro/contact or call 727-344-9754 and let's talk.

I offer both individual and group consultation. For therapists working towards EMDRIA Certification you are required to complete a minimum of ten individual sessions, the rest can be group or individual.
Group supervision (towards certification) is limited to two therapists in each group. I strongly recommend participating in at least a few groups as you will benefit from seeing your peer’s sessions, building a community, and normalization around many of the questions or concerns that come up in consultation

Consultation is not bound by the same geographic licensing restrictions as therapy. Carolyn works with EMDR therapists across the country. If you are seeking therapy rather than consultation, geographic licensing requirements would apply and can be discussed during your initial contact.

Carolyn is not only an EMDRIA Approved Consultant and Certified EMDR Therapist. She is also a co-author of a book on EMDR, has published two EMDRIA-approved trainings, and serves as an assistant trainer with EMDR Educators. Prior to becoming an EMDRIA consultant she was a Qualified Supervisor supporting the growth and clinical skill of therapists on the licensure path.
She has spent her career thinking carefully about how EMDR is learned and passed on, not just how it is practiced. That depth of investment in the field means you are working with someone who brings both clinical expertise and a genuine understanding of the learning process itself. Many consultees report that working with Carolyn was a deeply supportive and empowering experience.
